The 2013 Vuelta a Espana is history. It was history not simply as a cycling event but because Chris Horner (RadioShack-Leopard) became the first American to win the Vuelta. In addition, he became, at 41 years old, the oldest cyclist to win a Grand Tour. Horner claimed victory at the conclusion of the 21st and final stage of the race. Chris Horner (RadioShack-Leopard) became the oldest man to win a Grand Tour stage or lead a Grand Tour by winning Stage 3 of this year’s Vuelta a Espana. Today, the American veteran repeated the feat. Horner surged away from the red jersey group in the last five km to win the mountainous, 186.8-km ride from Torredelcampo to Guejar Sierra in 4:30:22. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) took second at 0:48, and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) outsprinted Ivan Basso (Cannondale) for third at 1:02.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) outsprinted Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) for second at 0:03. Horner is the new red jersey.
