Van Heeswijk Wins Stage 2 of Andalucian Tour

Max van Heeswijk (U.S. Postal Service-Berry Floor) has won Stage 2 of the Ruta del Sol.

Max van Heeswijk (U.S. Postal Service-Berry Floor) has won Stage 2 of the Ruta del Sol. The Dutchman took a bunch sprint from Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and Erik Zabel (T Mobile) to win the hilly, 185-km ride from Arcos de la Frontera to Benalmadena in 4:49:27. Zabel has taken the overall lead.

Rolf Aldag (T Mobile) and Alberto Gonzalez (Saunier Duval) ignited the day's racing. The pair attacked at 75 km, and their lead maxed out at 7:00 before the peloton, led by the sprinters' teams, began to chase. With 15 km left, the bunch reeled in the break.

Rabobank and T Mobile led the field into the sprint. Freire and Zabel were preoccupied with each other and never noticed van Heeswijk until he passed Freire in the final meters to win.

In the overall, Zabel leads Freire and van Heeswijk. All have a time of 9:12:17. Stage 3 will change the standings. It will be a 169-km ride from Humilladero to Puerto de Alto Virgen de la Sierra that will end with a Category 1 ascent. Who will win? Check in at http://www.roadcycling.com/ and find out!
