Geraint Thomas to Lead Ineos-Grenadiers in Giro d’Italia 2024
The British Ineos-Grenadiers cycling team is sending a strong roster to Giro d’Italia 2024 to support its Welshman Geraint Thomas in his quest for revenge in this year’s Giro after he lost last year’s Giro d’Italia in the penultimate stage time trial to Monte Lussari.
Hopes were high for Geraint Thomas to take his first General Classification victory in last year’s Giro d’Italia when he led the GC rankings before the mountain time trial on Monte Lussari in the penultimate stage. Thomas chose to switch bikes before entering the climb and this cost him valuable seconds after having competed in the Giro in impressive fashion.
Thomas is one of the most experienced General Classification riders in the peloton and he is a proven winner and an admired team leader. Thomas, who won the Tour de France in 2018, is starting the 2024 Giro d’Italia with great ambitions and is hoping to conquer the top spot on the General Classification podium when the race concludes in Rome on May 26. This year’s Giro starts in Turin on May 4.
“My preparation has gone really well and I’m feeling in a great place ahead of the start in Turin,” Thomas told Roadcycling.com. “Our team is sending a strong roster and there is a good bond within this group. We have some great additions to the line-up this year, but the core of our team is the same as last year’s Giro team.”
“We are eager to get the job done and deliver the expected. We have spent a lot of time together in training camps,” Thomas explained.
“Clearly Tadej Pogacar is the pre-race favorite for the General Classification win and this changes the dynamic of the race a bit. However, this also means all eyes will be on him over three long weeks of hard racing. Our plan is to be aggressive, take the race on and search for each and every opportunity to add pressure and gain valuable time.”
37-year-old Geraint Thomas will be supported by a strong Ineos-Grenadiers line-up that features Thymen Arensman, Filippo Ganna, Magnus Sheffield, Tobias Foss, Jhonatan Narvaez, Ben Swift and Connor Swift.
Italian Filippo Ganna will fight for stage victories in the time trials, while Ben Swift will work as Road Captain.
Thomas has participated in the Tour of the Alps, Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Strade Bianche, and Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta so far this season. His best result is 13th in the General Classification of Tour of the Alps.
