Bennati Wins Stage 5 of Med Tour
Daniele Bennati (Domina Vacanze) has won Stage 5 of the Tour of the Mediterranean. The 22-year-old Italian sprinter bested Baden Cooke (La Francaise des Jeux.com) and Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) to win the 114-km ride from La Garde to Berre l'Etang in 2:51:25. Paolo Bettini (Quick Step) remains the overall leader.
The field stayed together throughout the day. The race came down to a bunch sprint. Bennati's teammate Alberto Ongarato led him out, and Bennati took Marco Zanotti's (Fassa Bortolo) wheel before attacking with 250 m left.
In the overall, Bettini leads Laurent Brochard (Ag2r) by 0:10 and Sylvain Chavanel (Brioches La Boulangere) by 0:22. Tomorrow's sixth and final stage, a 42-km team time trial from Gemenos to Marseille, could be decisive. Will one or more of the other squads overtake Bettini and Quick Step?
