Team Milram with Great Ambitions for 2009 Amstel Gold Race

Fabian Wegmann leads German team in 2009 Ardennes Classics opener.

Captained by two-time German champion Fabian Wegmann, Team Milram will be at the start of the 44th edition of the Amstel Gold Race tomorrow. The German ProTour squad has great ambitions for the 258 km long race from Maastricht to Valkenburg. Fabian Wegmann will be supported by his German teammates Gerald Ciolek, Johannes Fröhlinger, Linus Gerdemann and Christian Knees, as well as by Dutchman Niki Terpstra, Slovak Peter Velits and, not forgetting, Austrian Peter Wrolich.

"As of this coming Sunday, the three Ardennes Classics are on my race schedule, and they are the absolute season highlight for me," stated Fabian Wegmann. "After being at the front in these races throughout the last years - it was unfortunately never quite enough for a top spot - I want to win one of the three races this year. I think we will be at the start with a really strong team and I'm therefore very optimistic."

Last year, the former Team Gerolsteiner rider finished 11th at Amstel Gold Race. In 2007 he finished 13th. The best Milram pro cyclist at last year's edition of the event leading through the Maas region to the dreaded finish on the Cauberg in Valkenburg was Erik Zabel, finishing 23rd.

The MILRAM roster for the 2009 Amstel Gold Race features Gerald Ciolek (GER/Ermatingen, SUI), Johannes Fröhlinger (GER/Freiburg im Breisgau), Linus Gerdemann (GER/Kreuzlingen,SUI), Christian Knees (GER/Euskirchen), Niki Terpstra (NED/Haarlem), Peter Velits (SVK/Riemst, BEL), Fabian Wegmann (GER/Freiburg im Breisgau), Peter Wrolich (AUT/Klagenfurt).
