1998 : La Chaux-de-Fonds - Autun (238 km)
La Chaux-de-Fonds:
This city will greet the Tour for the first time. Capital of the mountains of Neuchâtel
in the Jura vally at 1000 meters, la Chaux-de-Fonds is the craddle of Swiss watchmaking
industry and one of the largest agricultural regions of this country. Hometown of Blaise
Cendrars and the architect Le Corbusier.
Autun:
This city of 16300 inhabitants will host the Tour for the first time. Facing the Morvan
and built on a wooded hill, Autun was a prosperous roman capital and stll shows many
vestiges. Cardinal Rolin made it a religious centre. This historical town also owes its
development to the furniture industry.
