Zonhoven, Koppenbergcross...these are the courses where the hardmen come to play. Try running up a sandy thirty-five percent grade. Now, try doing it in bike shoes...in the rain...with a bike on your back. Now, do it again and again, and yet again. This is cyclocross, and these courses in Flanders showcase the hardest of the hard in a region where over 6,000 cycling clubs (yes, you read that correctly) routinely ride the rainy, cobbled non-category climbs, on snow and ice -- this is Belgium -- this is the home of Ridley Bicycles. While the previous model was based off of the Damocles road frame, the new model was designed using the lighter Helium SL frame as inspiration. It was constructed using 24-ton high modulus carbon fiber. This means that the material is able to withstand 24 tons of pressure per square inch. Seem like overkill, even for a cyclocross race Ridley knows that using a stronger carbon fiber means that tubing can be smaller and stronger at the same time. This enabled Ridley to make sever...
