Rides

USA - MI

Ride name: Copper Country Tour

Location: Keweenaw Peninsula, Houghton, MI, USA

Nearest town: Houghton

Ride difficulty: Normal

Distance: 60 miles

Directions:
From Detroit, take I 75 north to St. Ignace. Follow US 2 west to M 117 north. Turn left when you reach M 28 west and follow it to Marquette; Once in Marquette, take US 41 West to Houghton.

Places to stay:
Houghton: Franklin Square Inn, others.
Calumet: AmericInn + some mom n' pops.
Mohawk: For a true UP experience, stay at the White House.
Copper Harbor: the Minnetonka beats 'em all, or camp at Ft. Wilkins State Park.

Ride summary:
A hilly ride through dense woods, past old mine sites, and along the shore of Lake Superior.

Ride description:
Begins with a 3-mile push up Quincy Hill (12% grade) followed by easy rolling hills to Calumet. Past Calumet, the terrain gets hillier and progressively more forested, but the road stays reasonably flat. Once in Phoenix, decide how many RVs you want to deal with and either turn left (onto M 26) and to follow the shoreline, or to continue on US 41 through the woods to Copper Harbor.

Either way is a treat, and if you like, on the ride back turn toward the eastern shore and go through Lac La Belle and Bete Grise.

It's all good here...
