SPD-R system 'The new racing standard'
The 1998 SPD line-up includes the new
high-performance SPD-R system that further enhances pedaling efficiency for performance
road cycling. SPD-R is a completely new shoe and pedal system that increases pedaling
efficiency for performance road cycling. The new SPD-R system provides a more stable and
efficient shoe-pedal interface. It features a lowered platform, new bearing layout, fine
shoe positioning adjustment and other features. 3 Types of cleats (0, 3 and 5 degrees) are
available.
SPD-R collection
The collection consists of 2 shoe and pedal
combinations.

The SH-R211 is a high performance SPD-R competition road
shoe. It features a 3-dimensionally-contoured carbon graphite sole with instep stiffener
for the ultimate in lightweight and power transfer efficiency. The silver colored shoes
are also compatible with the current SPD system. Weight is 575 g. (pair, size 43, w/o
cleats). |
| Recommended pedal for this shoe is the new PD-7700 Dura-ace
pedal. The ball bearing unit of this SPD-R pedal is positioned close to the crank-arm to
reduce flex. Needle bearings units directly under cleat mount stabilize load distribution
and reduce flex. The large pedal surface is 6.5 mm closer to spindle to allow a lower
saddle position without changing leg extension. |

The SH-R121 is the best value for money SPD-R competition
road shoe. The cup moulded fibreglass reinforced outsole guarantees optimum stability and
power transmission. Three straps, one with carbon, secure excellent fastening. This
metallic blue and yellow shoe is also compatible with current SPD and system Look pedals.
The weight is 706 g. |
| Recommended pedals for the SH-R121 will be the PD7700 and
the PD-6600 Ultegra pedal. The new Ultegra pedal will be available from summer 1998
onwards. Featuring the same principles as the PD-7700 this pedal is ideal for racers and
serious cycle tourists. Weight is 335 grams. |
