Product Review: Pearl Izumi Vector Long Sleeved Jersey

By Corey Whalen
Apr 6, 2006, 11:44

Pearl Izumi Vector jersey.
Too many times when I go riding in the Wyoming winters and springs I have to put on multiple layers of clothing that usually includes a base layer, two or more jerseys (long and short sleeved), arm warmers, and a wind vest or jacket.  I decided that I would rough it the first time I rode with the Pearl Izumi Vector Kodiak Ultrasensor jersey and a base layer.  When I left for my ride I was warm even though it was only 37 degrees F. with about a 10 mph wind.  When I finished my ride I was toasty and thoroughly warm even though the temperature had dropped to 30 degrees and wind gusts up to 25mph. I finished my ride and was thoroughly very impressed with the Pearl Izumi Vector jersey’s ability to keep me toasty in the conditions I rode in.

The front of the jersey is covered in a black colored tightly knit wind and moisture barrier material.  The rest of the jersey is brushed fleece Ultrasensor material that Pearl Izumi has perfected in its cold weather gear.  The jersey’s materials are breathable yet effective against the elements - especially when paired with Pearl Izumi’s base layer shirts.

The jersey that I was given to test was black and red.  If red is not your color Pearl Izumi has more choices of colors that include the black and red, plus black and blue, and black and yellow.  The Vector long sleeved jersey will cost you though.  At $120  the jersey can be a costly buy if you are a cyclist on a tight budget.  However, I would definitely highly recommend that if you live in areas that get very cold weather you save up and purchase a Pearl Izumi Vector jersey.

Further features that are useful in the Vector Kodiak long sleeved jersey include two large gear pockets and a smaller zip up pocket that is just large enough for a flip styled cell phone, car keys, or some money for a mid ride snack.  The front zipper is full length like a jacket making the jersey easy to put on and take off.  At the top of the zipper Pearl Izumi has put a flap of fleece over the top that protects your throat, chin, and – possibly – beard from annoying chafing.  Furthermore, if you do get too warm, you can unzip the zippers under the arms to release the excess heat.

Pearl Izumi has done those of us that like to ride through cold winters outside a favor when they created the Vector Kodiak long sleeved jersey.  I highly recommend it to anyone that can afford one.
