Team Garmin-Sharp reveals 2013 roster

Team Garmin-Sharp today unveiled its roster for the 2013 season. With additions for 2013 including Rohan Dennis, Caleb Fairly, Lachlan Morton and Steele Von Hoff it's its youngest roster ever.

"We had our strongest season in the history of the team in 2012, with our first Grand Tour win at the Giro, and we’ll be looking to build on that success in 2013," CEO of Slipstream Sports - the company behind Team Garmin-Sharp - Jonathan Vaughters explained.

"Our roster has an outstanding mix of new and returning riders, but with a focus on the next generation of riders. Slipstream’s roots are in developing young talent and with additions like Rohan Dennis, Lachlan Morton and the return of Caleb Fairly, we’re poised to continue that tradition and fortify the future of cycling.”

However deep Slipsteam Sport's roots may be in developing young talent, last month Slipstream Sports decided to discontinue its Chipotle-First Solar development team and released all its riders from their contracts, thereby effectively putting a halt to the food chain, which has produced promising riders for professional Team Garmin-Sharp.

At the end of 2011 Slipstream's pro women's team Garmin-Cervélo was conveniently merged into a team with an unrelated name, before the AA Drink-leontien.nl team was completely shut down at the end of the 2012 season. Female pro cyclists can no longer hope for support from Slipstream Sports.

Leading the influx of up-and-coming young talent to the Garmin-Sharp team before the 2013 season is 2012 U23 Australian road race and time trial national champion Rohan Dennis. Like many other Australian cyclists, Dennis comes from a track cycling background, earning multiple world championship medals in recent years. However his fifth place overall in the 2012 Tour Down Under illustrated his potential for success on the road.

Joining him are two countrymen, Lachlan Morton and Steele Von Hoff. Both are graduates of Slipstream’s developmental program and rode as stagiares for the team in 2012 with great success. Von Hoff turned heads as a stagiare by finishing on the podium in stages of the Tour of Britain and Post Danmark Rundt.

Caleb Fairly is an addition to the team for 2013, but not an unfamiliar one. Fairly is also a product of Slipstream’s development program, netting one of its biggest wins in the 2010 Tour of the Battenkill. Fairly left Slipstream Sport's development program to ride for HTC-HighRoad in 2011 before moving to Team SpiderTech-C10, which has now folded.

Adding to the veteran side of the team, Nick Nuyens - who rode for Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank in 2011 and 2012 and for Rabobank in 2009 and 2010 - brings an impressive list of results, including victory in the 2011 Tour of Flanders. The Belgian Classics specialist will add to the team's roster for the spring classics campaign and share valuable experience with the team’s pool of emerging talent.

According to a team spokeswoman the team is aiming for new heights in 2013 hoping to build upon its past successes. Canadian Ryder Hesjedal is eager to defend his Giro d’Italia champion title, Andrew Talansky and Dan Martin are focused on continuing to deliver strong stage race results, and the team hopes Tyler Farrar is the man for the sprint finishes.
