Team Garmin-Sharp-POC Announces Roster for Giro d'Italia
Team Garmin-Sharp-POC earlier today revealed its line-up for the 2014 Giro d'Italia.
Former Giro d'Italia champion Ryder Hesjedal and Dan Martin will be the team's two captains in this year's Giro d'Italia. Supporting the two champions will be Nathan Haas and Thomas Dekker, who are both known for their loyalty and reliability. The team's roster also includes experienced former German national champion Fabian Wegmann and sprinter Tyler Farrar, who has failed to reach the high performance level, which fans have seen him deliver in sprints of former seasons.
Some cycling commentators are questioning the team's ability to deliver a top result in the team time trial that will kick off this year's Giro.
"We will go to the Giro d'Italia with two general classification leaders. Ryder Hesjedal and Dan Martin. Ryder already has the experience of winning a Giro, while Dan will have his first full out effort at general classification in a three–week race. This will be an important experience for Dan, and he is in the very fortunate position of having Ryder by his side," Team Garmin-Sharp-POC sports director Charly Wegelius explained.
"We will also bring Tyler Farrar, who hopes to build on a strong spring Classics season. The rest of the team is a great blend of experience and youth, with neo-pro Dylan Van Baarle having his first experience of a Grand Tour, which we hope will help lay the foundation for a bright future," Wegelius concluded.
Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Team Garmin-Sharp-POC owner Slipstream Sports said "Charly Wegelius is an outstanding Director Sportif and has led us to one Giro d'Italia victory. I'm sure his leadership and intelligence can help us achieve a high level of success yet again, and we have a strong team roster to be able to do that."
