Petacchi Wins Stage 3 of Dutch Tour

Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) has won Stage 3 of the Tour of the Netherlands.

Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) has won Stage 3 of the Tour of the Netherlands. Petacchi dusted Lars Michaelsen (CSC) and Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre) to win the 86.2-km road race from Kleve to Goch in 1:58:53. Max van Heeswijk (U.S. Postal Service) remains the overall leader.

Petacchi dropped out of the Tour de France, and the Tour of the Netherlands is his first major competition since the Tour. He admitted that he does not have his best form, but he said that he is coming around and that he should be fine in the Vuelta a Espana. At any rate, he added, the win did wonders for his morale.

The finish was crash-marred. Mirco Lorenzetto (De Nardi), Dmitri Defauw (Quick Step), and Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval) went down. All wound up in the hospital. It is not yet known whether the trio will ride the Stage 4 time trial.

In the overall, van Heeswijk leads Eric Baumann (T-Mobile) by 0:13 and Alexandre Usov (Phonak) by 0:14. Stage 4, a 22.2-km time trial in Goch, will change the standings. Who will move into the lead? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
