Froome Wins Tour de France; Groenewegen Wins on Champs-Elysees

Chris Froome wins Tour

Dylan Groenewegen has won the final stage of the 2017 Tour de France. Groenewegen, who rides for the Dutch Lotto NL-Jumbo team, took his first stage win by outsprinting the field on the Champs Élysées to win stage 21, a flat, 103 km ride from Montgeron to Paris in 02:25:39. Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Dimension Data) finished second and third, respectively. Team Sky Pro Cycling's Christopher Froome arrived at the back of the peloton and claimed his fourth Tour de France victory.

"This is an amazing place for the sprinters. To win on the Champs-Élysées makes it a perfect day," Groenewegen told Roadcycling.com after being celebrated on the podium. "We're only five riders in the team but it was enough today. They did a great job. They put me in a good position on the wheel of Alexander Kristoff and then I rushed to the finish line. This is my first stage win at the Tour de France. When I was a child I was looking at the Champs-Elysees stage on television and now I'm the winner here, it's wonderful."

Froome won the 3540 kilometer Tour de France 2017 in 86:20:55. Runner-up was Rigoberto Uran of Team Cannondale-Drapac, 54 seconds behind Froome. AG2R-La Mondiale's Romain Bardet finished third, 02:20 down, after delivering a weak performance in the stage 20 individual time trial.

On the winner's podium, Froome brimmed with joy and gratefulness. "It's an amazing feeling. The Champs-Elysees never disappoints. There's something magical about it when you spend three weeks thinking of this moment. It's very rewarding. It's amazing to see my wife and my son again after several months on the road. It has been so unique each time I've won the Tour."

"All my victories are so special in their own ways. This one will be remembered as the closest and more hard fought of them. It's a huge honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. It's a privilege to be going for the record next year," Froome added.

General classification runner-up Uran of Team Cannondale-Drapac was grateful for his second place finish and believed his result in this year's Tour could have been even better if luck had been more on his side in one specific stage - a statement which confirms Roadcycling.com's previous critique of the Cannondale team unfortunately having lost its time trial DNA in recent seasons.

"Finishing second to Froome at less than a minute seems pretty good to me. It's a quality final podium in Paris, so this is the greatest success of my career," Uran told Roadcycling.com. "This result is dedicated to my family, friends, my team and everyone who has supported me during the last three weeks. The most important thing this year was that I lost time in the time trial on the opening day. After that there wasn’t a lot of difference. This gives me hope for next year."

Third place finisher Bardet said he was satisfied with his performance in this year's Tour de France given the circumstances. "I have kept a place on the podium, so I am satisfied," Bardet explained. "I am grateful to most of my team and my friends who have been with me these three weeks. I am very proud of them. I gave it my all, but it just wasn't enough."

In other competitions, Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) won the points classification, Team Sky took the victory in the team competition, Warren Barguil (Team Sunweb) won the best climber classification and was crowned King of the Mountains, and Sean Yates (Team Orica-Scott) will take the white jersey for the best young rider home to England. Barguil was also elected most combative rider of this year's Tour by the race jury - a decision strongly opposed by Lotto-Soudal's Thomas de Gendt, who spent more than 1000 km of this year's Tour in breakaways.
