Boonen Wins Stage 1 of Eneco Tour

Tom Boonen (Quick Step) has won Stage 1 of the Eneco Tour. The world road race champion took a bunch sprint to win the flat, 176.9-km run from Wieringerwerf to Hoogeveen in 4:12:53. Simone Cadamuro (Milram) finished second, and Enrico Gasparotto (Liquigas) took third. Boonen has taken the overall lead in the Eneco Tour.

From the start, the pace was fast. At 55 km, Rik Reinerink (Skil) escaped. At about 80 km, Matthe Pronk (Unibet.com) and Koen Barbe (Chocolade Jacques) joined him. At 140 km, the escapees led the field by 5:45.
T-Mobile, Rabobank, Gerolsteiner, and Davitamon began to chase. The break never had a chance and was scooped up with 12 km left. A few counterattacks occurred, but Quick Step assumed command at the front and reeled them in. With 160 m remaining, Boonen lunged into the lead.
In the overall, Boonen leads Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) by 0:04 and George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) by 0:07. Stage 2 should see Boonen win again.
