Bertoletti Sails to Victory in Tour of Romadie

STAGE 1: Geneva - Val-de-Travers, 181 km

28-year-old Simone Bertoletti literally sailed to victory in the first road stage of this year's Tour of Romandie.  The Lampre rider attacked after only 20 km and waved goodbye to the field until over 160 km later after he had navigated the rain, sudden twists and turns of a rolling course to win by over a minute. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>

Behind him, the weather caused chaos in the bunch with over half the riders coming in almost 9 minutes behind the winner of the day; all thoughts of success floating away somewhere along the course behind them.

Team CSC attempted to control the Italian's lead for the majority of the day after it reached a maximum of 15 minutes.  As if to show his rivals that he was fully recovered after his weekend success in Belgium, Tyler Hamilton came out of the bunch to pick up what could be a valuable 2-second bonus at the final intermediate sprint of the day.

But today's race belonged to a rain-soaked Bertoletti, scoring only his second ever professional victory.  Kisses were blown and arms were raised in celebration with those brave enough to withstand the conditions.

Bravo Simone!
