I’m amazed at the explosive sprint McEwen had to win the stage. It looked like he was shot out of a cannon! Fassa Bortolo made a good effort to get Petacchi set up but he couldn’t make it through. It seems Zabel and Cipollini will have to leach off other riders to lead them out in any potential sprint finish wins. In fact, it appears Cipo’s lead out man; Fagnini will not be back as a result of a crash and apparent broken collar bone.
Speaking of crashes, too many turns too close to the finish made things hairy. After the last turn, Jimmy Caspar of Cofidis and Kurt-Asle Aversen of CSC went down hard. Asle Aversen seemed to take the worst of it slamming his head to the pavement. Without a helmet, I doubt he would have gotten up. Luckily, they both crossed the finish line and the peloton avoided contact with them.

The man in yellow is Thor Hushovd. What an appropriate name for the Norwegian. Who can forget the Norse God of thunder! (certainly, my favorite comic book hero) I wonder if Hushovd’s parent’s names are Odin and Jord. Thor actually came back through the peloton after breaking his bike frame. This was a textbook display of team effort by Credit Agricole (For more info on this, check out CA rider Julian Dean’s diary report).
Tyler seemed at ease in his interview with Roadcycling.com. He commented that the “team really rode as a cohesive unit.”Hamilton added “we rode very strong…always together” and “I was really happy.”
Today was a bit unsettling for me watching Casper and Asle-Aversen hit the deck. Anything can and does happen. At least the big boys who we hope to see at the end are not in the news!
