Italy's Enrico Gasparotto of the Astana team took the honors on the fifth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico on Sunday when race leader Michele Scarponi saw his advantage cut.
Fellow Italian Stefano Garzelli was second on the 216-km route from Chieti to Colmurano to move second overall and reduce defending champion Scarponi's lead to 10 seconds.
Kazakhstan's Astana rider Maxim Iglinskiy finished third and lies third in the standings for the week-long race.
World champion Cadel Evans is handily-placed in fourth overall, 18 seconds behind Androni Giocattoli's Scarponi, after the Australian BMC rider was fourth on the stage.

Organizers were forced to change the route for Sunday's stage slightly because of snow in the Apennine mountains.
The race, which started on Italy's western Tyrrhenian coast, concludes on the Adriatic east coast at San Benedetto del Tronto on Tuesday.
