Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara wins record-breaking 4th world time trial champion title ahead of an impressive David Millar (Great Britain) and Germany's Tony Martin who suffered an unfortunate puncture.

Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara won a record fourth time trial title with a dominant ride at the 2010 UCI road cycling world championships earlier today.

Cancellara charged through the 45.8 km circuit in the Australian port city of Geelong in 58 minutes and 9.19 seconds to finish one minute 2.75 seconds ahead of Briton David Millar. Germany's Tony Martin took bronze after suffering an unfortunate puncture which may have cost him the silver medal.

The Swiss 29-year-old, one of just a handful of riders to break the hour-mark on an overcast, sometimes gusty day, endured a nervous moment when he appeared to scrape a barrier midway through his run but was otherwise a model of control.

"It was maybe the hardest one because before this time trial I didn't know actually where I am really standing," he said in a televised interview.

"I'm really happy about winning my fourth time trial World championship. I remained focused on my tactic and simply did what I do best and that's do a perfect ride. I'm happy!," Cancellara told Roadcycling.com.

The victory added to Cancellara's 2006, 2007 and 2009 world titles and also made him the first rider to win a fifth medal in the world time trial. The Swiss will also compete in the elite men's road race world championship on Sunday.

"I want a bit more time to enjoy this (today)," he commented and added "Tomorrow morning when I wake up, then it's another day. and then I will focus on the road race."

The 2010 Cycling World Championships run until Sunday, culminating in the pro men's 262.7 kilometer road race. More than 500 cyclists from 53 nations are competing.
