Cavendish Takes Romandy Tour Prologue

By Gerald Churchill
Apr 29, 2008 - 11:38:16 PM

Matt Cavendish (High Road) has won the prologue of the Tour of Romandy. The British wunderkind took the 1.9-km, flat, out-and-back event in Geneva in 2:07.60. Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) finished second at 0.27, and  Michael Albasini (Liquigas) took third at 0:01.

Bradley Wiggins, Cavendish's teammate, posted the early standard with a 2:08.48, which remained the best time for a long time. Eventually, Bjorn Schroeder (Milram) assumed the lead with a 2:08.29. Albasini grabbed the top spot on the leaderboard with a 2:08.01, and Bennati posted his time before Cavendish crossed the finish line with the winning time.

Cavendish said that the prologue's distance was just right for him and that a somewhat longer prologue would have been perfect for Wiggins. Today's victory gave the Briton the lead in the overall, but do not expect him to keep it. Stage 1 is a rugged, 182-km ride from Morges to Saignelegier, which will feature two Category 2 climbs and a Category 1 ascent. The riders will face the Category 1 climb, Le Gruyere, just 34 km from the finish. Who will breast the climb in the lead group? Check in at www.roadcycling.com and find out!
