Caisse d'Epargne to End Cycling Sponsorship

Caisse d'Epargne won't renew its sponsorship of the ProTour cycling team led by Spanish star Alejandro Valverde at the end of this season.

Caisse d'Epargne won't renew its sponsorship of the ProTour cycling team led by Spanish star Alejandro Valverde at the end of this season.

Spokesman Thierry Martinez says the French bank will sponsor the team through the 2010 Tour de France but will not extend its six-year sponsorship.

Martinez said Monday that Caisse d'Epargne is thinking about its sponsorship options.

It's the latest corporate pullout from cycling. Denmark's Saxo Bank said this month it's ending its sponsorship of the team this year.

Sports officials in Italy in May banned Valverde from riding there for his alleged connection to the blood-doping probe known as Operation Puerto. He has denied such allegations.
