Alberto Contador May Quit Cycling, Mother Says
Alberto Contador is serious about quitting cycling regardless of the outcome of his doping investigation, the Tour de France champion's mother said Saturday.
"There is a campaign to defame Alberto by the French -- maybe the same as against Lance [Armstrong]," 55-year-old Gregorio Ballesteros said. "He needs us now more than ever because he is innocent and a clean rider."
While Pinto rallied around its most famous son, organizers of the Oviedo Criterium said Saturday that Contador would only be racing there on Oct. 30 should his suspension be dropped. However, Contador can still attend as a spectator.
Basque President Patxi Lopez wanted to calm consumer fears over the condition of Basque meat because of Contador's defense over the steaks bought across the border in Irun.
"The consumer - a cyclist or not - has all the possible guarantees that the product has no residues," Lopez said.
