2012 Giro d'Italia Reportedly to Start in Denmark

Danish newspaper Politiken and Danish National Television station DR today reported that the 2012 edition of the three-week Giro d'Italia race will start in Herning, Denmark before transfering on to complete the rest of the race in Italy.

Danish newspaper Politiken and Danish National Television station DR today reported that the 2012 edition of the three-week Giro d'Italia race will start in Herning, Denmark before transfering on to complete the rest of the race in Italy.

Herning Mayer Lars Krarup refused to confirm the news to Roadcycling.com and Roadcycling.mobi earlier today, but stated that a press conference "announcing a major international sports event to take place in Herning in 2012" would take place in Horsens, Denmark tomorrow Friday.

The fact that the announcement is to be made in Horsens and not Herning makes Roadcycling.com and Roadcycling.mobi reporters speculate, that the 2012 Giro d'Italia - if indeed starting in Denmark - will include stage routes involving both these cities. We speculate that an opening prologue will take place in Herning - the birth city of Tour de France winner and Team Saxo Bank-SunGard owner Bjarne Riis - and that the following stage will take the riders from Herning to the city of Horsens.

Previously it has been speculated that the 2012 Giro d'Italia was to start in either Washington D.C., USA or in Monaco.
